〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Olive Silverlock
CHARACTER AGE: 15
SERIES: DC Comics (New 52)
CHRONOLOGY: Gotham Academy #10 (+ "Gotham Academy Endgame", a short tie-in taking place during the Batman storyline Endgame)
CLASS: Average citizen / Daughter of a super-villain
HOUSING: Private housing either in Maurita Falls or Nonah. Hope this is okay even though she's underaged. If that's not allowed, I'd prefer she be randomly housed with people close to her age (14-17) in any city.
BACKGROUND:
While the DC Comics universe gets into its crazy end of the world events, superhero related drama and the pursuit of justice, Olive Silverlock exists in the background of it all as an ordinary resident of Gotham City. Well, mostly ordinary. Olive used to live with her mother, Sybil Silverlock, when she was a small child before Sybil was jailed and later put into Arkham Asylum. Why this happened Olive was never told, so she grew to have a resentment for Batman - the one who put her there. She has been more or less living in Gotham Academy ever since, under a Wayne foundation scholarship.
In the 11th issue she learns her mother was a costumed arsonist by the name Calamity, a demonic spirit that has been apparently cursing the Silverlock family for generations. The spirit manifests as a split personality and it's heavily implied that Sybil has no real control over this persona, but is aware of its existence. When it takes over she has no control of her actions and, if able, dresses up as the evil being while setting fires through telekinetic sparks set by her sight. While Olive always suspected something strange about her mother, she clearly never knew the extent of how deep it all went. Nor that her own connection to this cursed monster is now forming.
Despite this, Olive was still a well-adjusted girl. She was part of the choir club, loved stage theater and had a boyfriend named Kyle Mizoguchi. That changes the summer before the comic begins, where an unknown incident has caused her to withdraw completely into herself. She silently breaks up with her boyfriend, quits her clubs and becomes dark mooded. The only person who really tries to engage with her aside from Kyle is Mia "Maps" Mizoguchi, Kyle's younger sister, who quickly becomes Olive's best frend through sheer persistence. Over the course of the comic she slowly comes out of her shell and makes friends with Pomeline Fritch (a snarky girl obsessed with the occult) and Colton Rivera (a troublemaker who always has a plan.) Olive, Maps, Pomeline and Colton together set out to investigate the strange mysteries of Gotham Academy, including what is rumored to be the ghost of Millie Cobblepot and the secrets of her diary.
Things take a sharp turn in Issue 8 when Sybil is killed during the events of a Batman storyline, Endgame, and Olive must cope with her death. Yet there are clues that Sybil may not be quite as dead as reported, while Olive begins to slowly discover that she may have inherited more than she expected from her mother. She is brought to MoM just after the 10th issue, just before she and her friends plan to hitch a ride into Gotham City with the tennis club so she can investigate the mystery of "Calamity" further.
PERSONALITY:
The creators of Gotham Academy once likened Olive Silverlock to being the "Batman" of their comic. Not in the sense that she's a crime fighter who dresses in a bat costume, but in overall demeanor. Like Batman, she is broody, a silent observer who thinks more than she speaks and has an instinctive tendency to distance herself. She even has a tragic family history that sets the course for many changes in the type of person she is. While she does believe in the rules, she isn't opposed to breaking them for a greater purpose and only errs on the side of caution when need be. In fact she can be quite fearless when the time calls for it, like shooting down a manbat or confronting Killer Croc with questions about her mother instead of running from the monstrous looking man.
The core difference between Olive and Bruce Wayne however is all in the environment. Despite being in the suburban outskirts of Gotham City, the school is fairly friendly and welcoming. There is an air of mystery around campus that allows Olive's more adventurous side to come out, as she tries to discover more about the school and about herself in the process. The teachers are oddballs, but certainly mean well, and the students are only mischievous at their worst. While Olive works to distance herself from others, the students don't shut her out and as the comic progresses she slowly begins to be more like her normal self before the mysterious summer incident.
Olive is a good natured girl who wants to do right by everyone around her. While she might come to dislike certain people, she does not hold grudges (except for Batman, but there's a whole issue there) and is quick to turn her mind if they show her their good side. Pomeline is an easy example of this, as the two girls go from being antagonistic to friendly terms within a few issues. Her friends have their different quirks and Olive gravitates toward them because they bring joy into her life, in a time where it is hard to find. Much like Batman needs his partners to bring light into the dark, Olive relies on her friends to help her in a similar manner. However because she's less emotionally constipated than Batman, she also doesn't try to run from this need for long. She cares for her friends and appreciates their presence, because she doesn't know what she would do without them.
Though there are a few things Olive isn't entirely pleased with. While her friends love the stories of ghosts and witchcraft, Olive thinks of them as stupid and just smoke and mirrors. It's partly due to her experience with Batman, who is considered an urban legend in the city, jailing away her mother when she was young. The sight of the bat signal makes her scowl and she isn't afraid to even get into a shouting match with the caped crusader when he confronts her toward the end of issue 6. In issue 2 when Pomeline tries to do a ritual to revive Millie Cobblepot's spirit, she interrupts it out of anger because she realizes her favorite book (Millie's diary) was stolen for some sham of a resurrection ceremony. Perhaps its because of the rumors of her mother that must have sprouted after she was jailed, that she was some evil witch locked away, that soured Olive on these things. She doesn't believe in these things even when she is subconsciously capable of lighting things on fire just as her mother can.
While she does not recline away from her friends, with her instinct being to go to them even when she's trying to back away, she does recline from herself. The thought of what happened to her mother and what may happen to her makes her withdraw quickly, afraid to face her own fears. When she helps others, she is fearless in doing so. When it is time to help herself, she freezes on the spot and doesn't know what to do but run. Olive is very used to bottling up all her emotions and compressing them so they don't get in the way of her life. That often leads to angry outbursts when she's reached her breaking point, where all fear goes away and only anger remains. An anger that is liable to turn dangerous because of the powers she is unaware she has.
In spite of her difficulties, Olive goes on through life trying to smile and be as positive as she can be. While she isn't a natural optimist, she isn't as cold as she tries to appear and has genuine care for the well-being of others. When hard times come she relies on her friends more than she'd ever admit, but she is still trying to understand who she is in a world where she feels constantly haunted by the past. Life isn't always simple, but when is it ever when you live in Gotham City?
POWER:
Pyrokinesis (canon): Olive can create sparks of fire with her mind by intensely focusing on what she wants to set on fire. In the comic she does this subconsciously, completely unaware of her powers and can never remember what she does, but in game this will be a conscious ability that she knows of and can control. The one exception to that is if she gets intensely overwhelmed by anger, which will send her into a temporarily trance where she can lose control of her powers. This isn't a "I stubbed my toe and I'm mad" sort of anger trigger, so it won't happen often and will mainly be done with a plot in mind.

FINAL NOTES:
For inventory, I'd like for her to have the Diary of Millie Cobblepot that was stolen from her by Damian Wayne at the end of issue 6. Also a picture of her and her mother together that she got from Killer Croc.
